Are you eligible for promotion?

To get promoted is the inner will of many of us I am not saying all of us, because I have seen that there are people who don’t like to be upgraded they are happy on the position they are. Yes, there are watchers who just watch around what’s happening here and there?

The persons who want to be upgraded may be categorized as:

  • Those who have will only.
  • Those who have will to be promoted and desire to improve themselves.
  • Those who develop themselves by self-improvement and not dependent on others feedback.

During my carrier I came across many times to evaluate many candidates performances and recommend them for further promotions. One of my assignment I was assigned to visit entire region and find out the persons eligible for promotion working in the company. I travelled all over  the country and met many experienced and achiever of the company who were achieving their targets consistently over the years and were not getting promotions. While interviewing them I asked one common questions from all of the candidates. What is the reason you think you were not considered for promotion although there were many opportunities?

Most of them answered that they don’t know the reason, some of them said favoritism.

 I asked them all that did your seniors ever informed you about your strengths and weakness or your development areas to improve?

The answer was again no.

Only one guy said that on his query his boss informed him that you are weak in English language….

So what you did? I asked him.

He replied that I joined English language course and even than I was not promoted…

There were many messages and area of improvements of our company’s appraisal system after interviewing the best amongst all and there were many areas of each individual that need to be improved from individual prospective.

Are you eligible for promotion? Instead of asking management one should be asking first from himself. The answer should not be on gut feeling it should be on facts and figures. There are performers and non-performers in a team.   I have seen across my career that there are many performance who are unable to project themselves. They are good in numbers but less in weightage. Why is it so? There could be many reasons one of the common reason is they may lack in interpersonal skills. They could be victim of favoritism as it is also a fact in our environment but it doesn’t mean all. To be optimistic one should always focus in his improvement both in quantity and quality of his work at the same time he must learn the art of projecting himself. Some of the important interpersonal skills are:

  • Confidence.
  • Communication
    • Verbal communication
    • Nonverbal communication
    • Listening
  • Positive attitude.
  • Team work
  • Openness.
  • Decision making
  • Conflict handling
  • Reactive or responsive.
  • Empathy
  • Constructive feedback
  • Relationship building
  • Presentation skills
  • Tolerance

By improving interpersonal skills you will be able to improve yourself, self-evaluate and it will also help you to achieve your numbers. Remember the basic criteria of promotion is how you is your performance in current job assignments the quantitative wise achievement and qualitative both matters so try to achieve your 100 % in both quantitative numbers and qualitative. Try to be your own boss for self-assessment and development rather depending on others.

    Hi Zulfiqar, thank you for sharing the article. Well from one side what you have mentioned is true and could go on and on harping on the said traits. But on the other hand it is us as managers, bosses and so called leaders who haven’t understood the need for your subordinates improvement or that we dont want to see them promoted to take up the said role. Therefore it is our obligation to guide and develop our team to see their individual development and success and ofcourse a properly guided team will give you and the organisation the required achievements.
